Beautiful Mural - a wonderful presentation of Goa Print E-mail

Mural on GCCI building at PanjimThe Narayan Rajaram Bandekar Building, housing the main office of Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry at Panaji, is a landmark building and very strategically located. The side wall of the building facing Mahatma Gandhi M.G Road, now has a huge mural, depicting industry and the social scenario of Goa - Mining, Tourism, Manufacturing, IT, Fishing, Agriculture and Water Sports.

A Mural is a visual art painted on any large permanent surface -usually on walls. It speaks a universal language and is a symbolic representation of an idea.
It has been the constanl endeavour of GCCI to contribute not only to industry, but to society at large. The side wall of the Chamber's building was the ideal place to project a message.

It was Mr. Sanjit Rodrigues, the then Commissioner of CCP who suggested that this wall of the GCCI building be used to display a mural that would add to the beauty of the city. Mr. Nitin Kunkolienker, the former President of the Chamber supported the idea and decided that the wall could be used to beautify the city.

Mr. Joseph D'Souza. a member of the GCCI Managing Committee, took the initiative to locate an artist and recommended Mr. Justin Lobo, a graduate from the 1st batch of Goa College of Art, who designed a beautiful collage depicting the beauty and industry of Goa in perfect harmony. The execution of Mr. Justin's design was carried out by Master Craftsman - Vilas Mandrekar.

The mural was cast in fibre glass as it had to be long lasting and safe. Putting up this mural was nothing short of an engineering feat, as work commenced on this in the midst of the fierce monsoons and the entire structure weighed approximately 900 kgs. The grid was made in steel to support the structure.

The cost of erecting the mural was very high and Mr. Narayan Bandekar, Vice President of GCCI and Managing Director of Narayan Rajaram Banderkar group of companies magnanimously offered to sponsor the entire structure. Earlier Mr. Bandekar had also donated Rs. 50 lakhs to the Chamber, pursuant to which the Chamber's Building in Panjim was named after him.

This beautiful mural is a wonderful representation of Goa in all its splendour and was dedicated to the City of Panaji at the hands of Mr. Digambar Kamat, Chief Minister of Goa.
